oh jeez

i bought this album for a buck from the stepdad bandcamp site and am going to record it to cassette so that i can play it on my sony cfs-v2 while i work on mopets.

DID SOMEONE SAY HIPSTER LOL

los dorados sticker

working on this sticker for the club. drawing in the whiskers is killing me! still have to do a black layer of them behind everything! guh!

my music maker keyboard

i’ve finished with the little red keyboard i got the other day. it was a pretty quick and easy bend, and a lot of fun!

the knob on the lower left is a pitch bend. i recycled the potentiometer and knob from an old busted ricochet tv game system i found at a second hand store. i was pretty bummed i couldn’t make it work again, but at least i can recycle most of it.
the two thumb tacks are body contacts that also bend the pitch.
on the back there is a 1/8″ jack recycled from a set of old computer speakers.
first switch, starting from the left, is a kinda wimpy distortion i found by bypassing a resister on the circuit board.
second is a sustain switch. the sound normally trails off once a key is played, flipping this switch holds the note until another note is pressed.
third switch is power on/off (this toy had no off switch).

having the sustain on and playing with the pitch knob and contacts sometimes causes the toy to crash, but it resets instantly so all you have to do is keep playing it and it’ll keep making noise.

i’d typically paint up something like this to make it look rad, but i kinda like the neglected toy look this thing has going on. i even left the $1.99 TOY sticker on it from the thrift shop.

i’ll get a recording of it sometime soon, and probably a video, as this thing is going on etsy or ebay to fund more parts for more projects.

new toys

lindsey and i went and did a little thrift shopping today, spent a couple bucks and got a couple toys! i’m kinda in love with the little red keyboard, i’ve already torn into it and added a pitch knob, a couple body contacts that make the pitch go crazy, a sustain switch and a 1/8″ line out jack. no room in it for a 1/4″ jack, sadly. i’ll probably make a little video of what i’ve done it/will be doing to it here pretty soon.

haven’t really messed with the drum toy yet. at the very least i think i’ll repackage it into a smaller hand-held housing and give it a line out so it can be plugged into a mixer/computer. hopefully i can find some fun things to do to it once i open it up and start poking around.

HAPPY 25th ZELDA!

you making me feel way old by turning 25 today, zelda! thanks a lot!

you can get your zelda (and tons of other awesome old games) fix on your pc (and mac?) here!

apc

i know there are tons of 556 apc schematics out there already, but i wanted to draw my own based on the orignal forrest mims dual 555 version.

i’ll be building a few of these into some fun enclosures once i get a few more parts. i have plans to try and recycle parts from a crappy kids keyboard to build a fully functioning little 8bit synthesizer using a bunch of trim pots and momentary switches in place of the pitch pot in the schematic.
i’ll draw up a new schematic if i end up doing that, as i haven’t seen any around. it’ll probably detune all the time and not work very well, but it would be a fun project!

so many toys

it was kinda silly of me to start this new blog and then go off to reno for a week where i wouldn’t be able to update it very easily. i’ve got lots to update about, though!
my friend troy and i went thrift shopping yesterday and hit every single thrift store in reno. i ended up with seven new toys to play with when once i get home, including a yamaha portasound vss-30! and for less than some people spend on lunch! i love small city thrift stores.

a few of the toys will make super fun bending projects, i can’t wait to get them home to open them up!

pictures of everything soon!

break and remake

i like to take apart low voltage sound makers of all kinds, short circuit them into making new and interesting sounds and sometimes repackaging them in new enclosures. it’s a ton of fun finding hidden sounds in crappy kids toys! i’m also experimenting with building my own circuits.
i’ve always had a lot of fun playing with stuff like this, i’ve had a few jobs in the past recapping boards or doing super fine surface mount ic soldering, no formal training though.
it’s something i truly enjoy.
